Chapter One

Dreamkit yowled in pain as she was flipped over in her nest. Her eyes flew open and she saw her brothers wrestling in the crowded nursery. Dreamkit mumbled to herself and stepped outside into the bright sunlight. Dreamkit's automatically closed shut as the glare of the cold Leaf-Bare sun caught her off guard. Dreamskit slowly opened her eyes and looked around. The camp was bustling with life. Cats getting ready for hunting patrols, coming back from border patrols.The usual day to day life in the LakeClan camp. Dreamkit yawned then heard a usual voice behind her.

Dreamkit's eyes widened and she turned around.

"What have I told you before Dreamkit?"

Dreamkit sighed and recited what her mother, Moonlily, told her siblings and her every day.

"No going outside the nursery without at leats another kit or queen outside too...."

Moonlily nodded and sat down.

"Good. Skykit and Jaykit even listened to that. Even for them that was pretty good..."

Moonlily chuckled to herself.

"I know. But they woke me up! I needed fresh-air and I forgot about the 'rule'."

Dreamkit turned her back and rolled her eyes. Jaykit, Skykit and her were only seven sunrises old. Still pretty young, but she felt like she could do everything in the Forest of Clans. Dreamkit smiled and kept watching the clan life go by.....

Dreamkit awoke in the nursery. She jumped up, forgetting what she was doing before. Then Dreamkit heard a yowl split through the air, and Moonlily rushed in.

"What's happening Moonlily!"

Jaykit squealed at the top of his lungs. He was easily panicked, and the medicine cat, Sparrowleaf, said that this could kill him someday. He could die of panic because his heart would just....stop. Moonlily grabbed Jaykit and brought him to the back of the den. He was struggling, trying to get free, trying to stay safe. Dreamkit peeked outside in horror. The clearing was splattered with blood and some cats weren't moving at all.

Then Dreamkit was yanked back into the nursery a very angry Moonlily. Moonlily threw her against the back of the den wall. Dreamkit whimpered in pain. She didn't know what she had done wrong, to deserve this kind of treatment. Dreamkit breathed in and out, trying to stay calm. Her eyes flashed around the nursery, searching for some comfort. Then she fainted as a yowl split through the air, and all was silent....

Dreamkit opened her eyes to see everything was blurry. She blinked several times to focus on her surroundings. Her back hurt, but that wasn't the worst of her problems. She saw that half the nursery was ripped open and trampled. Dreamkit looked around for her mother or siblings....but no one was here. Dreamkit jumped up and ran outside the destroyed nursery.

She breathed in a sigh of relief as she saw all cats outside. She saw her mother's pelt among the throng of cats. She ran forward to the front of the crowd, only to see what they were all looking at. Miststar was in the middle of the clearing, writhing in pain. Sparrowleaf was trying to save her from losing a life. He kept on telling his apprentice, Leopardpaw, to get more herbs. But they both knew it was hopeless. Their leader was going to lose a life, and that was that.

Finally Sparrowleaf stood up and turned to the clan. He beckoned for the deputy, Flameriver, to come over to him. Sparrowleaf whispered something into his ear, and Flameriver announced it to the clan.

"Miststar is with StarClan! She has lost a life! Let's hope StarClan can heal her wounds!"

Flameriver nodded to the clan and walked away. His eyes, filled with worry, shot to Dreamkit as he passed her. Dreamkit tilted her head in confusion as he looked at her with hope. She shook her head, trying to make herself believe that it was just some emotional thing that he was going through....But something inside Dreamkit said it wasn't.....and that she was important in some way.
