Chapter Four

Dreamkit watched as Cloudpaw raced after his mentor, Sandpelt. Cloudpaw had now been an apprentice for two moons, Dreamkit was only four moons. Dreamkit sighed in frustration. She wanted to be training along side Cloudpaw, not playing in the nursery. Dreamkit looked around for Eaglekit. She spotted Skykit and Jaykit playing with a piece of fresh-kill. Dreamkit purred in amusement as a shadow went over them. The warrior, Hawkclaw, was scowling at them. The two kits cowered in fear then quickly ran away, leaving the destroyed piece of food, for Hawkclaw to clean up. Dreamkit then spotted Eaglekit, looked through the camp entrance. Dreamkit lowered herself into a crouch, and stalked towards the unaware Eaglekit.

When Dreamkit was within striking distance, she leaped. Eaglekit squeaked a surprise, as they both tumbled outside the camp. Dreamkit stopped as she saw how big the forest truly was. She shakily got up and looked around. It was HUGE. Eaglekit took a step forward on the unknown surface.Then stopped as she saw a patrol of cats walking towards them. Eaglekit let out a small squeak and backed up, searching for the entrance Dreamkit looked at the leading cat to see that it was Miststar. Dreamkit lifted her head to look at Miststar. Dreamkit looked up proudly, and tried to show no fear.

Miststar chuckled.

"What are you two doing outside the camp?"

Before Dreamkit could answer, Flameriver stepped out of the camp.

"Dreamkit did an impressive stalking and launch onto Eaglekit, which made them roll outside. I saw it all."

Flameriver purred at his kin. Miststar nodded.

"It must have been fun to watch, but now you two should be getting back inside. You still have two moons before ever venturing out here again."

Dreamkit felt her ears grow hot as some warriors in the patrol chuckled. Dreamkit lowered her head and nodded, then slunk back inside. Dreamkit had expected more praise from the LakeClan leader, not curt words. She padded to the nursery, head low and tail dragging. As Dreamkit walked inside the nursery, she saw Sparrowleaf and Leopardpaw, crouched over some cat. Dreamkit rolled her eyes. More injuries? Dreamkit curled up in her nest, falling asleep to the scent of death.....

Dreamkit woke up in the shining forest again. Dreamkit scowled. She wasn't in the mood for this. She really wasn't in the mood for anything! Then Dreamkit saw the same cat as before. He purred and rested his head on Dreamkit's head.

"When the Dawn Sun Rises,a Dream Comes,a Threat Surfaces,and All Hope is Lost. 

You are the one Dreamkit. I saw you, seasons ago, when I was still alive. Try to help those close to you. But it will not help, as that cat's destiny is already laid out. Whether we like it, or not..."

Dreamkit's looked up at this cat with questioning eyes.


"What do you mean I am the "one"? I don't want to be special! I want to be with Cloudpaw...."


The cat purred and looked into her eyes, as if to say, just follow what you are meant to follow.

Dreamkit woke up to feel her mother wrapped around her. The nursery smelled new, but her mother still had the scent of death on her.

"What happened Moonlily? Why is Skykit sulking? Where's.....Jaykit....."

Dreamkit's eyes clouded with fear as she realized who it was that Sparrowleaf was crouched over. Dreamkit pulled away from her mother.

"No! it can't be! Why wouldn't you wake me so I could say good-bye! This can't be true! WHERE IS HE!"

Dreamkit lowered her head and whimpered softly.She lowered herself to the ground and curled into a small ball, covering her head. She heard Moonlily walk over. Moonlily sat beside her and laid her tail across Dreamkit's head.

"I couldn't..."

Moonlily's voice choked as she tried to explain.

"It went to fast....I went to go wake you so you-"

Moonlily looked away but continued talking.

"-could say good-bye...but then right as was about to wake you....Sparrowleaf said he was already gone..."

Moonlily laid down beside Dreamkit and curled herself around her sulking kit. Dreamkit told Moonlily about everything that should have happened with Jaykit here....

"We should have been made apprentices together....we should have become warriors together...fought our first battle together...gone to our first gathering together....we should have done a lot of things..."

Moonlily nodded and licked Dreamkit's head. Dreamkit then thought of what the StarClan cat had told her....

"I had a dream...."

Dreamkit was cut off as Moonlily purred.

"Yes yes...you had a dream about how everything should be...yes yes...we will talk about it later."

Moonlily got up and walked out of the nursery. Dreamkit sighed. She needed to tell someone about this dream! But who....

Dreamkit looked outside, to see Cloudpaw eating some fresh-kill. Dreamkit's eyes sparked happily and she trotted over to Cloudpaw....
